Fix the Alignment Issues of Your Closing Wheels Today for A Better Yield Tomorrow

Did you know that your crop emergence can be affected by the gap in between the wheels of your planter? Wheels that are too close to each other can create air pockets around the planted seeds. Similarly, wheels that are too wide apart may not help you in closing the trench properly. Ideally, you should leave two to two and a half inches of gap in between the closing wheels for planters.

Proper Alignment Matters:

Once you plant the seeds in the furrow, you need to close the system properly. This will ensure that your planted seeds are covered properly with soil and they are in contact with the soil. The closing system is generally at the back of the row units.

You need to make sure that the gap in between your closing wheels for planters is accurate for closing the seeds correctly. You need to check whether the side-by-side movement is working properly. If there is too much movement, you need to fix or even replace the mounting holes and the bushings of the closing tail.

Centering The Closing Tail:

Once you are done with aligning the closing tail, you need to see whether the closing tail is centered. For this, you need to follow a process. Keep the planter on a concrete floor. Roll the planter frontward for around 3 feet. Check the mark that your closing tail has left on the ground. The mark will help you identify if the closing tail is centered or not.

You need to check and know which process works for your closing system. In some cases, you need to loosen the nuts below the tail so that you can maneuver the side-by-side movement before tightening the nuts again. It is better to be prepared before you start using the closing wheel on your field.

Measuring the Closing Wheels Distance:

You need to measure whether the distance between the closing wheels for planters is accurate. As mentioned above, if the closing wheels are too close, you will leave air pockets around the planted seeds while closing the trench shut. On the other hand, wheels that are wide apart will not be able to close the trench properly.
